William A. McConnell was the first settler to Richmond in 1837. They held a contest in 1844 to name the town and the prize was awarded to the first man who climbed the highest at the raising of a new mill. This winner could name the town and Isaac Reed named it Richmond after his childhood in Vermont. Many of Richmond’s original buildings were built from the mid-1840’s through the 1860’s consisting of a Greek Revival rural farmhouse.
